  • An old clean rag
  • Soft bristle brush
  • Mild detergent.
  • Lukewarm wate
  • Vacuum Cleaner
  • Leather conditioner (for leather sofas)

It's always ideal to have all supplies handy before you get started. This way, the process remains smooth, and you get the job done in no time.

Step-By-Step Cleaning Process

Now it's time for the main event. Let's understand how you can clean your sofa to make it look as good as new. Here we bring you two methods- one is with a vacuum cleaner and one without.

But before you get started, strip the sofa down. Remove any removable cushion covers, pillowcases, or fabric protectors, and wash them as per the instruction label.

With Vacuum Cleaner

Using a vacuum cleaner is one of the most efficient ways. This is what you must do.

  • Start by attaching the upholstery nozzle to your vacuum cleaner and keep the pressure to a minimum.
  • Gently run the vacuum cleaner on the sofa. Make sure you pay special attention to every crevice, seam, etc.
  • Now, look for stubborn dirt, such as pet dander, dust, etc. Here, you can use a brush attachment to get the job done.
  • If you can remove the cushions, make sure you vacuum under them as well.


Without Vacuum Cleaner

If you don't have a vacuum cleaner or don't want to use one, this is what you must do.

  • Start with the soft bristle brush. This helps you loosen any dirt or debris hidden.
  • You can use a dry rag to push them out or pat the cushions gently to remove the trapped dust.
  • Do this for every nook and cranny. Inspect every inch carefully, and remove all the accumulated dust.


Cleaning The Sofa

We are down to step number two. You have now successfully removed all dust and debris. So, do this next:

  • Prepare a solution of mild detergent and lukewarm water
  • Next, dip your clean microfiber cloth into it and wring out all the excess water.
  • Wipe the entire sofa in circular motions
  • Pay close attention to any stains and spots and blot them until they fade away. You can use mild spot cleaners if necessary.
  • Finally, use a dry cloth to absorb any moisture and let the sofa air-dry completely before use. You can switch on the fan at full speed to accelerate the process.


Deodorize Sofa

To make sure your sofa smells good after the cleaning process, you can follow this step at the end (before you let the sofa air dry). This is especially necessary if your sofa is emitting a bad odor.

  • Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the entire sofa.
  • Let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour to ensure it absorbs all oils and odors.
  • Once the time is up, you can either vacuum it or use a soft brush to sweep off the baking soda.
  • For an extra touch, lightly spritz the sofa with a fabric-safe deodorizer.


Tips For Maintaining Sofa To Extend Its Lifeline

Now that you know how to keep the sofa clean, let’s move on to the maintenance tips to extend its lifespan.

  • Make sure you deep clean your couch every 3 to 6 months and make it a weekly effort to remove all the dust and debris.
  • If you can remove the sofa cushions, flip and rotate them often to prevent uneven wear and sagging.
  • Tackle spills and stains as soon as they occur. It is always best to have a fabric-safe spot cleaner at home in case of such emergencies.
  • Make sure your sofa is not subjected to direct sunlight as it can fade or weaken the fabric.
  • If you can, use washable sofa covers as they can protect everyday wear and tear.
  • For leather sofas, apply a leather conditioner every few months to prevent cracking and to maintain a supple texture.
  • Don't ignore the armrests as they are high-contact areas prone to wear. Here, you can use armrest covers.
