10 Top Tips To Help Your Child Sleep In The Heatwave

10 Top Tips To Help Your Child Sleep In The Heatwave

On February 28 this year, the India Meteorological Department warned us of yet another year of extreme temperatures and above-normal heatwaves. Another report suggested that if 2024 was the warmest year on record, 2025 might be even worse.

With extreme heat waves becoming the new reality, our little ones are among the most vulnerable.

Heatwaves can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke in children, as their bodies struggle to regulate temperature as we do. Also, the intense heat can disrupt their sleep cycle and make it harder for them to fall and stay asleep.

But dont worry! We have got you covered with 10 easy tips to help your child sleep soundly, even during the hottest nights. So, without further ado, lets dive in!

Why Is It Difficult To Enjoy A Good Nights Rest During Heatwaves?

During the heatwave, the temperature and humidity are higher than usual, and can be challenging for the body to cool down. When the body doesn't cool down in time, sleep eludes you.

The rising heat also means excessive sweating, dehydration, and sticky skin, which again causes extreme discomfort. Further pushing sleep away! It can even lead to irritability, frequent wake-ups in your child, and poor quality sleep. Infact, studies show that higher ambient temperatures were associated with shorter sleep. So, when your child doesnt get enough sleep it becomes difficult for them to go through the day with zeal and enthusiasm.

Best 10 Tips To Help Your Child Sleep Well In The Heatwave

Best 10 Tips To Help Your Child Sleep Well In The Heatwave

As aforementioned, it is difficult for your child to sleep during the heatwave but not impossible. We bring you these 10 tips that can be a game-changer. Try them out!

1.Choose A Breathable Mattress

A breathable mattress is an excellent choice for your child. Better yet, choose something that's breathable and specially designed for children. This will fetch them the comfort they need to fall asleep effortlessly and will also keep them as cool as a cucumber throughout the night.

Remember, well-ventilated mattresses can curb the effects of heatwave by regulating the body temperature. So, investing in the right mattress for your child can be a perfect solution to beat the heat.

2.Keep The Room Cool

As mentioned earlier, studies have shown that a higher ambient temperature can lead to shorter sleep cycles. Therefore, it is important to keep the room cool. If you are using AC, the room temperature can be between 23 degrees to 27 degrees Celsius. You can also use fans and cross-ventilation for continuous airflow.

If your child's room tends to become hot, it is best to use blackout or thermal insulated curtains to block heat. Finally, avoid using heat-generating electronics before bedtime.

3.Block Out Sunlight

If your child's room falls under direct sunlight, the room temperature will become higher by nighttime. So, keeping the room dark is the only solution. As mentioned in the above point, you can use blackout or thermal insulated curtains here.

If you can, it is best to open windows in the evening once the temperature drops down. This allows cooler air to enter and pushes away the accumulated hot air. You can also use energy-saving lights like CFLs or LEDs, as they produce less heat. Another trick is to use a dehumidifier to cool the room down because excess humidity can make you feel sweaty and sticky. This way, your child can easily find their sweet spot when it is time to hit the sheets.

4.Choose Lightweight Bedding

Let's say you invest in the best breathable mattress. Perfect! But if you use thick sheets, you prevent the bed from doing its job. Also, thick bedding can make your child feel excessively warm. Here, lightweight bedding is what you need. When it comes to sheets, go with bamboo or cotton. They wick away any moisture and keep your child cool.

Next, swap thick and heavy blankets for all-weather comforters or light duvets. This prevents overheating and discomfort.

5.Dress in Breathable Fabrics

When it comes to clothing, always dress your child in lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton or bamboo. They wick moisture away and let air circulate. This is especially important when it comes to nightwear so your child can enjoy a good night's rest without any discomfort.

As much as possible, avoid synthetic materials because they can trap heat and cause discomfort. Infact, at times, the heat accumulated can even lead to rashes. Loose-fitting pajamas or sleeveless nightwear keep the body cool.

6.Offer a Lukewarm Bath

One of the easiest ways to cool down the core temperature of the body and get ready for bed is to take a bath. This must be done at least an hour or two before your child hits the sheetş̧̧.

Now, avoid hot showers as they can increase the body heat. Whereas, cold showers can lead to shivering and can be uncomfortable for your child. So, the best solution is a lukewarm bath.

7.Keep Hydration Levels Up

Water is a necessity during a heatwave. Depending on the age, your child needs anywhere between 4 to 8 cups of water each day. You can also include cooling foods, such as watermelon, coconut water, and cucumber to amp up the hydration levels. Remember, dehydration is a risk during a heatwave and it can lead to heat discomfort and disrupt sleep.

That said, keep fluid intake low before bed to prevent any accidents or frequent awakenings for a trip to the bathroom.

8.Use a Cool Compress

If your child seems to be struggling and is unable to fall asleep despite everything, you can try a cold compress. This can provide instant relief and help them fall asleep quickly. All you need is a washcloth dipped in cold water and wrung nicely.

Now, place the damp cloth on pulse points like the wrists, neck, and behind the knees. Let it sit for a bit. This can instantly lower the body temperature. You can also use cooling gel pads or frozen water bottles wrapped in a cloth. This simple trick can be super effective.

9.Create a Calm Sleep Environment

Just like us adults, your child needs a calming routine to relax before bed. It not only brings a sense of peace but can decrease the body temperature gradually and help your child fall asleep faster and enjoy a deeper sleep. To do so, you can dim the lights, play soft music, tell them a story, journal together, etc. Basically, you must design a set of activities to soothe your child.

But make sure you keep distractions like mobile phones, tablets, etc., away. Children are inherently curious and won't miss an opportunity to fiddle through technology. However, the blue light from screens can further delay the onset of sleep.

10.Adjust Sleep Routine

We all have a set bedtime that we tend to follow. But during the heatwave, it is best to adjust your routine to accommodate the heat. For instance, if the temperature is soaring, you can shift your child's bedtime to slightly later in the evening.

That said, make sure your child's sleep routine doesnt change drastically, even in summer. While slight tweaks are okay, it's best not to do anything extreme. This way, you can maintain a healthy circadian rhythm.

Conclusion

As a parent, you want your little one to be as comfortable as possible, especially during this heatwave that's making the country sweat. And while you do everything in your power to ensure they get the perfect snooze, let us take care of the rest!

FAQs

When it's too hot, try to keep their room cool with fans or AC. You can also use breathable bamboo bedding, dress them in light clothing, and ensure they are properly hydrated. Finally, a lukewarm bath before bedtime can help regulate the core body temperature.

Hydration is the key to reducing body heat in a child. You can also try cooling foods like watermelon to help you with the same. Another trick is to apply a damp cloth on pulse points. This can help reduce the heat.

For your child, it is important to have a calming bedtime routine. You can include soothing activities that work well for both of you, such as baths and storytime. Also, invest in a comfortable mattress. This can go a long way in keeping your little one comfortable and helping them fall asleep faster.

To help your child fall asleep in just 5 minutes, you can try deep breathing exercises, play white noise, keep lights dim, ensure a cool room, avoid stimulating activities before bed, and use a weighted blanket or bedtime story to promote relaxation.
