Decoding Athletes’ Sleep: The Paris Olympics 2024

Paris Olympics 2024 has been the talk of the town, not just for being the biggest sporting event but also for the controversial cardboard bed frames. However, there's more to the story.

Recently, the American Volleyball player Chiaka Ogbogu took a closer look at the mattress, only to find out they weren't actual mattresses but plastic!

These mattresses use something known as Airfiber technology. It is made of intricately woven polyethylene strands and is said to create a responsive and breathable filling for athletes.

Each mattress consists of three Airweave mattress blocks along with a topper for added comfort. But is that enough? Does this provide the rest our Olympians deserve? Let's find out!

Before we get started, we also take this opportunity to congratulate our winners who have put their best foot forward and made us ecstatic.

We are incredibly proud of our shooters for their remarkable achievements at recent events.

Manu Bhaker secured a bronze in the Women’s 10-meter air pistol and added another bronze alongside Sarabjot Singh in the Mixed 10-meter air pistol team. Swapnil Kusale also earned a bronze in the Men’s 50-meter rifle three positions. Their dedication and skill are an inspiration! We cannot stop gushing.

Paris Olympics Cardboard Beds: The Reason Behind Them

Let’s get straight to the point now. You are probably wondering the reason behind the cardboard beds. So, let's understand more. They aren’t all futile!

The use of cardboard beds aligns with the Paris 2024 Olympics' commitment to sustainability. These beds are fully recyclable and help to make these "the Greenest Ever Games." Once their function is over, the cardboard can be easily recycled and reduce negative environmental impact.

Infact, transporting them is also super easy. Therefore, it reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting larger, pre-assembled furniture. Also, they can be quickly assembled on-site.

Despite being made of paper-based materials, these beds are designed to be surprisingly sturdy. They can support up to 250 kilograms (550 pounds) and maybe, even handle a celebratory jump or two!

After the Olympics, the mattresses, which are partially made from recycled fishing lines, will be donated to various organizations, including the French Army, Emmaüs, etc. It ensures that the materials continue to serve a purpose beyond the event.

While the thought behind the action is commendable, is it interfering with players giving their best?

Why Cardboard Beds Can Have A Negative Impact On Athletes?

Are cardboard beds offering all athletes the best slumber? Let’s take a look.

1. Can Lead To Potential Health Risks

Cardboard beds, despite their innovative design and sustainability factor, may pose health risks. Athletes playing at such a high level in the Olympics, require optimal sleep to maintain peak performance.

A bed that does not provide adequate support can lead to discomfort and injury.

For example, waking up with a tweak or catch in the back before the big game could be disastrous for an athlete and it can compromise their performance.

After months of training, losing to poor sleep is not the way to go!

This is why Frederick Richard brought his own mattress because he wanted a comfy sleeping surface. For an athlete, this is crucial.

2. Firmness of the Mattresses

The mattresses used on these beds, while improved from the ones used in Tokyo 2020, are still reported to be very firm.

Now, the firm is good. However, excessively firm mattresses can cause muscle soreness for some athletes.

A perfect mattress must fetch you an amalgamation of comfort and support. This lack of uniform comfort is missing, which can affect sleep quality. So, it can lead to subpar rest and recovery.

Spanish gymnast Ana Perez said, 'The beds are very hard. Terrible. Very, very hard.

3. Psychological Impact

Discomfort is one of the major factors that can interfere with a player's sleep and inadequate sleep should not be underestimated. When you don't get enough rest, it can lead to anxiety and decreased focus.

Coping with this on a normal day feels tough enough. So, during this high-tension environment where athletes must be at their best, this stress can negatively affect their mental state and overall performance. Even the best players cannot win against poor sleep!

4. Consistency in Sleep Quality

Having uniform sleeping arrangements can ensure that all athletes have an equal chance at optimal rest.

However, the variability in comfort and support provided by the cardboard beds can lead to inconsistencies in sleep quality across the board.

So, at the end of the day, some athletes are getting unintended disadvantages.

Is Poor Sleep And Discomfort The Reason Behind The Losses Of A Few Players?

Imagine having to sleep on a hard uncomfortable surface when you have a big event the next day. Do you think your focus will be 100%? Probably not!

It goes up, especially when it is an athlete, as speed, precision, and absolute focus are crucial for them. A slight amiss can spoil the entire game.

To put it simply, poor sleep and discomfort can negatively impact an athlete's performance and can lead to losses. Several factors contribute to this connection.

1. Muscle Recovery

Inadequate sleep hampers muscle recovery and leads to fatigue and soreness. Athletes who do not get sufficient deep sleep may experience prolonged recovery times, which can affect their performance in subsequent events.

2. Injury Risk

Poor sleep increases the risk of injury due to impaired motor skills and slower reaction times.

An athlete who awakens with a tweak or catch in their back might perform below their usual standard or even suffer a more serious injury during competition.

3. Decision-Making and Focus

When players don’t get enough sleep, it impairs their cognitive functions such as decision-making, focus, and alertness.

For instance, a gymnast may misjudge their timing on the apparatus, or a swimmer might have slower reaction times at the start of a race. All of which can hamper their performance.

4. Mental Health

Sleep deprivation can negatively affect mental health. It can lead to anxiety and stress, which can interfere with a player’s game.

For instance, an athlete who is not well-rested might experience higher levels of pre-competition anxiety, which can hamper their confidence and concentration during the event.

5. Weight Gain

Inadequate sleep can slow metabolism and cause the body to store more fat. Even a few days of improper sleep can do this.

Weight gain can push boxers out of their weight class and lead to disqualifications.

Infact, some athletes have anonymously shared that discomfort from the cardboard beds has led to poor sleep, which has caused back pain and restlessness.

The Role Of Good Mattress In Enhancing Sleep and Athletic Performance

A good mattress can make all the difference. Let’s look at the top factors.

1. Helps Recover With Ease

Athletes need high-quality mattresses because they offer a proper balance between comfort and support for their muscles and joints. This helps them recover easily after intense physical activity.

When the mattress provides proper alignment, it reduces strain on the body and lets athletes heal and repair tissues more effectively.

2. Improves Their Sleep Quality

Sleeping on a thin cotton mattress to sleeping on a 5-star hotel bed is different, isn't it? The sleep quality the latter offers is exquisite.

Good mattresses reduce discomfort and interruptions during sleep. One can enjoy a deep slumber almost effortlessly. So, athletes experience a more restorative sleep.

High-quality sleep is essential for them to maintain energy levels, cognitive function, and overall health.

3. Provides Excellent Comfort and Reduces Any Aches

The best mattresses are those that offer proper pressure point relief. It should be able to conform to the body’s shape and offer an almost warm hug. This helps reduce chronic pain and stiffness.

This level of comfort allows athletes to wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the day’s activities without unnecessary discomfort.

4. Temperature Control

Imagine being interrupted by sweat and heat. This is especially the case in humid environments.

However, advanced mattresses feature materials that regulate temperature, such as the SmartGrid Technology by The Sleep Company, which comes with 2500+ air channels. This keeps the body cool and comfortable throughout the night.

Proper temperature control is important for uninterrupted sleep cycles.

5. Reduction of Sleep Disruptions

Mattresses with motion isolation properties minimize disturbances caused by movement, whether from a partner or the individual’s movements.

This feature ensures that athletes can enjoy uninterrupted sleep, which is vital for maintaining peak physical and mental performance.

The Final Word

The Paris Olympics 2024 is one of the major sporting events of the season. While proper training has been crucial, athletes' sleep quality should have also been prioritized. The use of cardboard beds, while environmentally friendly, presents challenges for a few players, and unintentionally, they are at a disadvantage.

Even a few nights of poor sleep can affect an athlete’s recovery, muscle repair, and overall performance.

This is why athletes always need a superior quality mattress that can offer them a balance between comfort and support. When the sleep conditions are right, achieving athletic excellence becomes easy for our seasoned players.
