8 Ways to Deodorize Your Mattress
Mattresses begin to smell over time due to the accumulation of sweat, smudges, dust mites, allergens, molds, and spills. It is not feasible to purchase a new mattress online or in a retail store every time the foul odor of the mattress makes sleeping uncomfortable.
A mattress is used throughout the year, regardless of any conditions, such as hot and muggy summers or illnesses. Such occurrences and usage emit a distinct odor. It’s only natural that it needs to be cleaned and maintained over time. Mattresses, unlike clothing, cannot be machine washed and should not be soaked in water. Here are some practical methods for getting rid of foul odors.
1. Vacuum your mattress
Vacuuming is the most simple and easy way to maintain your mattress regularly. The upholstery attachments of the vacuum cleaner reach every corner of the mattress and help you remove dust, dead skin particles, molds, and mites that can cause several allergic reactions.
Vacuuming the mattress also lets fresh air circulate within the fibers of the mattress and reduces excessive moisture. Also, if you have pets in the house, frequent vacuuming prevents shredded hairs from piling up.
2. Expose your mattress to sunlight
Sunlight is a natural disinfectant and kills bacteria without leaving any harmful chemical residues on your mattress. Mattresses become an abode of bacteria and fungi over time. Exposure to sunlight at regular intervals is the best solution. Another way to deodorize your mattress is by airing it out regularly. It allows airflow to pass through the mattress, which removes accumulated moisture and dampness from sweat, spills, and humidity.
3. Dusting your mattress
One more old practice to deodorize your mattress is dusting it out in sunlight. To dust out the mattress, use a long and thick stick and beat the mattress a few times. It allows dust particles and mites to come out with force from sneaky places that vacuum cleaners cannot reach. To avoid any damage to the mattress in this process, ensure not to use excessive force.
4. Pay attention to your bedding
Everyday bedding accessories are equally responsible for causing foul smells to your mattress. Thus, it becomes crucial to maintain them frequently. Though you can’t clean your mattress daily, if you clean bedding accessories often, it prevents mattresses from stinking for a long time.
Washing your everyday linen on a frequent basis is one of the easiest ways to keep your mattress clean and odorless. Change mattress covers, bedsheets, or cushion covers every week with freshly washed alternatives. Also, avoid using damaged bed sheets and mattress covers to protect the mattress from getting dirty. If you are sick, do not repeat bedding without washing them properly with detergents and disinfectants.
5. Use kitchen ingredients
There are several instruments you can find within your house which can help you deodorize your mattress. Many kitchen ingredients are the best examples of easily available and less expensive deodorizers for mattresses.
6. Baking soda
One of the readily available ingredients in your household is baking soda. Sprinkle it on your mattress with the help of a flour sifter and create a thick coating and keep it there for a few hours. The baking soda’s chemical properties help neutralize the mattress’s pungent odors. Use a vacuum cleaner to vacuum the baking soda thoroughly. Keep windows open to ventilate the room while you layer up the mattress with baking soda.
7. Vinegar mixed with water
Vinegar is a miracle worker on stains and spills. Use one part of distilled white vinegar with one part of water and spray it on the stains lightly. Do not use it too much or dampen the mattress with it. Later, let the mattress dry out naturally. Though the vinegar mixture has a strong smell, airing out the mattress helps remove the smell. Also, you can add a few drops of essential oil to cover the smell of vinegar and give the mattress a fresh smell.
8. Corn Starch
Mattresses frequently absorb body oil, which imparts a foul odor. The combination of cornstarch and baking soda effectively cleans and removes body oil stains and odor. Spread the mixture over the mattress and leave it for a while. Then, using a vacuum cleaner, remove it and air the mattress.
9. Lemon
Lemon is a natural neutralizer and also has antibacterial qualities. Wipe the surface of the mattress with lemon slices without worrying about the stickiness of juice or pulp. Leave it to air dry for a few hours for best outcomes. It not only removes the foul smell but also kills germs and bacteria on the mattress.
10. Use mattress protector
A mattress protector is an excellent way to keep your mattress clean and odor-free. A mattress protector with waterproof or water-resistant qualities is better than regular mattress protectors. Bamboo Mattress Protector from the Sleep Company is an excellent example of a mattress protector which provides ultimate protection to mattresses from stains, mites, allergens, and sweat.
11. Use an Air Circulating mattress
The best way to prevent a mattress from smelling bad is by allowing air circulation within the fibers. In fact, some top mattress brands in India, like the Sleep Company, have specially designed grid texture mattresses that come with inbuilt air channels. These channels circulate air within the mattress and prevent them from stinking.
12. Change Your Old Mattress
If your mattress is way too old and has run its course of life, change it with a new one. Try to buy mattress online which is designed with quality material and has a long life span. The SmartGRID mattress from the Sleep company is a great option to replace your old mattress.
Bottom Line:
Deodorizing a mattress is not difficult; however, it’s most important to maintain hygiene and healthy sleeping surroundings.
